Do you often cringe at photos of you and wish that you looked a bit more polished or glamorous? Of course you do. I'm not saying you're hideously ugly, but all of us could do with a bit of 'touch-up' if we want photos of us to look as good as how we think we look in our heads.

Step forward Facetune, a photo retouching app with a powerful toolset. It will give you the same kind of edge that those pixel-perfect celebrities have in glossy magazines. Goodbye wrinkles, farewell cellulite, adios warts!

Cheaper than botox

Unlike other iOS image editors like Photoshop Touch or Snapseed, Facetune is specifically designed for retouching photos. All of its many editing tools can help you touch up a portrait or a selfie in some way. You can widen a smile, whiten teeth, change your eye color, refine your jaw line, hide gray hair, and much more.

These effects are achieved through one or a combination of the retouching tools that appear along the bottom of the Facetune interface. For instance, there's a smoothen tool, a patch, red-eye removal, defocus, and more.

There's also a handy crop tool, as well as lots of cool filters and frames to help give your images a striking artistic effect.

You can import any image on your device to be edited in Facetune, or use your camera. Once you're done with your creation you can save it or share it on your favorite social network or messaging service.

10-minute makeover

The idea is that by applying these different tools to a face you can remove imperfections and enhance its best features. It takes a while to figure out what each tool is best used for, though if you don't have the time to experiment yourself there are some helpful video tutorials available in the app's help section.

Facetune's user interface is clear and well designed. Once you've selected your tool, you simply manipulate the photo with your finger to apply it. You can pinch to zoom in and get more precise, or pan around the image by holding down both fingers and swiping around.

There's a button in Facetune that shows you the original image when you hold it down, and multiple undo/redo to help you correct mistakes.

The internet's next top model?

Facetune lets you have the face you've always dreamed of. The app fun to learn and the tools within the app are surprisingly powerful once you've mastered them.

Facetune is ideal for beautifying yourself to fool people on sites like Facebook, Snapchat or Tinder into thinking that you're model material. If you already are model material, why not use it to make yourself look ugly and stop creeps hassling you on social media?

Bestie - Best Selfie Every Time 2.2.0

Bestie is an app designed to make your selfies always look great. Never mind that you’re not photogenic, just apply a filter, touch it up a little, and you will look ready for the cover of a magazine.

Make great selfies in record time

If you are a selfie lover, then Bestie is designed for you. It lets you make yourself beautiful with a bunch of real-time filters and editing tools. First you select a filter that you like, or let the app inspire your with a random choice from its filter selection. The next option lets you slightly tweak the appearance of your skin, but frankly the 5 options make little difference. You can also add a vignette, activate an option that improves night shots, or apply a slight blur.

Once have the pose and filter effects selected, you can take a picture with a simple touch screen. Then either save and share the image, or retouch a little further for that real model look.

The second path is when Bestie shows its potential. The app offers several options of facial retouching: removing blemishes (from you or the photo), stylizing your face, enlarging your eyes, and altering your nose. Think of it as risk free, temporary plastic surgery.

Select, slide, and enjoy

Like similar selfie apps, B612 and Candy Camera, Bestie lets you select filters simply by sliding your finger across the screen. This option is really useful, especially as the filter quality is good. I can easily tell that they are designed for portraits, as they did noticeably improve my appearance.

But as I said, the real success of Bestie is the ability to retouch your image. This can dramatically improve the appearance of your face with little previous configuration: just tell the app the position of your eyes and your lips and move the bar of each effect to make it more or less. I know it sounds silly, but it is actually kind of magic.

The problem is that is mostly automated. This means that sometimes it will make a photo worse – and continue to make it worse - as you are unable to perform specific adjustments. For example, if it makes your nose look odd it will simply double down on the effect rather than giving you more control over the change it is making.

There is also an absence of some other modifying options. You can’t change the tone of your skin, color of your hair, add makeup, or modify the picture - common features in similar apps.

Another option that would certainly improve the app are basic editing tools, like trimming the image or adding a frame. In the age of Instagram, getting the image to the right dimensions is all important so - after a quick go on Bestie - I still needed to use another app to edit to size.

Just to make you beautiful

Bestie is a good app if all you want to seem more beautiful or handsome in photos. However, if you want to do much else, you will be better served looking elsewhere.

LightX 1.2

Increasing numbers of people use their phones as cameras every day, some even using them to take pictures more than they call people! To support this wave of snap-happy users, there are plenty of apps which help you to take the ideal picture.

LightX - Advanced Photo Editor is one such app for the iPhone, providing a huge amount of after-effects and tweaking features to make your snaps stand out. Considering the very low price of this app, you get a lot of useful tools.

Craft the perfect image

LightX - Advanced Photo Editor really stands out from the competition for sheer number of features. These start simple, with tools like hue, saturation and contract sliders to adjust the colour and tone of a picture, before getting increasingly more involved. You can change the exposure or add shadows and highlights to make pictures look like they were taken in different conditions.

You’ve even got access to the typical kinds of filters that are seen on the likes of Instagram, such as vintage, retro, glow and more. These work very well and can totally change an image.

The main benefit of LightX is probably that all these tools are in one place, saving you from opening images in several apps and losing quality or resolution on the way. You even have access to tools like lasso selection and smart erase that are usually seen in desktop editing suites. This lets you edit regions of the image separately to get very specific effects.

A smart interface and not just for casual use

LightX - Advanced Photo Editor is very easy to use, though it may take you some time to find all the tools. That’s to be expected however when it packs so many. The app is very good at using the screen space available to set up your work environment, giving you access to menus without taking up all the screen. Often you just use simple sliders which is easy to understand for anyone.

This casual approach also includes some premade effects for maximum usability, plus fun stickers, to add to your pictures before uploading to social media. On the flip side, the app caters to more professional users by letting you smoothen skin, reshape pictures, crop and rotate or add artistic special effects.

In other words, you can do a bit of everything with this app, even things usually seen on expensive desktop software like Photoshop. A special selfie mode should add appeal to users looking for powerful tools that are still fun and easy to use.

Very robust image editing

The amount of features in LightX - Advanced Photo Editor is amazing for the very low price. Being able to change every aspect of a picture, not just apply slapdash filters, is really amazing on a small screen and the controls are well presented. Mastering them can take a little work, but that’s to be expected. However, do note that older devices may struggle with the processing power needed for all these detailed edits.
